What It’s Really Like to Be Part of the R&M Latin Dance Community
Looking for salsa or bachata classes in Sydney? You might come to learn a few steps, but you could leave with so much more!

When we first welcome someone into R&M Latin Dance, they usually come for one simple reason. Maybe they want to learn salsa, try something new, get out of their routine, meet new people or finally do something they have always wanted to try.
Some arrive with a partner. Others walk through the door on their own, not quite knowing what to expect. Almost everyone starts with the same question: Am I actually going to be able to do this?
We know that feeling. Starting something new can be exciting, but it can also feel a little intimidating, especially when you have never danced before. That is why, for us, R&M has always been about more than teaching dance steps. It is about creating a place where people can learn, grow, connect and make memories together.
Everyone starts somewhere
Think back to your first day at something new. You probably didn't know everyone, you weren't sure what you were doing, and you might have wondered whether you would fit in.
Our beginner salsa and bachata students often feel exactly the same way.
During those first classes, we break things down step by step. Mariano and Rhi have a knack of making you feel very at home and at ease! You start learning the rhythm, getting comfortable with the movements and understanding how to dance with another person. Slowly, things that seemed complicated begin to make sense. You make mistakes, laugh about them, try again and discover that learning to dance doesn't have to feel perfect to be enjoyable. Along the way - something starts to change, you start to recognise familiar faces, head in early to chat together before class, or head to the pub together for a quick drink after. People who arrived as strangers begin to feel like familiar faces you are happy to see each week. That is part of the reason our classes run as progressive courses over 6 weeks, it allows the time to properly learn the skills but also to make genuine friendships!
That is one of our favourite parts of teaching beginners: watching people become more comfortable, not just with the dance, but with themselves and the people around them.

You don't need to bring a partner to find your place
One of the things we love about our community is that people can start their dance journey in different ways. Some students join as couples, excited to share a new hobby together, others come on their own, ready to meet people and do something different with their evenings.
You don't need to arrive with a group of friends or already know how to dance. Our classes give everyone the opportunity to learn alongside other beginners, practise with different partners and gradually become more comfortable on the dance floor.
Partner rotation is part of that experience for students who attend individually. It gives you the opportunity to practise with different people and learn how to adapt your dancing rather than relying on just one partner, and because everyone is learning together, there is plenty of room to make mistakes, ask questions and improve at your own pace. (Mariano is the first one to make the classes super interactive!)
You might arrive knowing nobody and, a few weeks later, find yourself chatting with classmates before the music even starts. Sometimes, all it takes to meet new people is having something fun to do together.
It's not just about what happens in class

Of course, we love teaching salsa and bachata. Seeing students develop their timing, coordination, partner connection and confidence is incredibly rewarding, but some of the most special memories happen outside the lesson itself!
Apart from the dance classes themselves R&M run themed parties, celebrations, social mixers, performances, dinners, beach days, dance trips and experiences that bring everyone together beyond the studio.
There are evenings when the music is playing, everyone is dancing, and you can look around the room and see how far people have come since their first classes! There are birthdays to celebrate, milestones to share, performances to prepare for and plenty of moments when we simply get together, enjoy the music and have fun. And yes, we have also made some couples along the way!
For us, these experiences are part of what makes learning to dance so rewarding. You are not just working towards a new skill. You are giving yourself opportunities to do things, meet people and make memories that might never have happened otherwise. The best part? You don't need to be an advanced dancer to enjoy being part of it.
Everyone has to start somewhere.
From your first steps to dancing around the world

One of our favourite memories has been sharing our love of dance with our students beyond Sydney, including our trip to Italy.
Getting to experience Mariano's hometown together, sharing new places and enjoying dance as a group reminded us of something we believe deeply: dance has a wonderful way of bringing people together.
When you share an experience like that, you are no longer just the people who happen to attend the same class. You are creating memories that belong to all of you.
It is also a beautiful reminder that learning salsa and bachata can open doors beyond the studio. As your skills grow, so do the opportunities to explore social dancing, attend events, perform, travel and discover new experiences with people who share your passion.
Not everyone will want to perform or travel, of course. Some people simply love having a weekly activity that makes them feel good. Others discover a passion they never knew they had. There is room for all of those journeys at R&M.
Watching people grow is the best part
As teachers, we get to see things that students don't always notice in themselves.
We see someone who was nervous during their first class begin to move more naturally to the music. We see people who struggled to remember the basic steps start connecting movements together. We see students become more comfortable dancing with different partners and enjoying the experience rather than worrying about getting everything right.
And sometimes, we watch complete beginners discover that they want to take their dancing further.
They progress through our levels, join performances, challenge themselves with new skills and discover just how much they can achieve when they keep showing up.
There is no single definition of progress. For one person, it might be remembering a whole sequence. For another, it might be having the confidence to dance socially for the first time. For someone else, it might be finding a hobby that gives their week something to look forward to. We celebrate all of it. Because the goal isn't to become the best dancer in the room. It is to enjoy the journey, keep learning and discover what dancing can bring into your life.
Why people keep coming back to our R&M Community
Every student has their own reason for joining us, and those reasons can change over time.
Some love the challenge of learning something new. Some enjoy the music and movement. Others appreciate having a regular social activity that gets them out of the house and away from their usual routine.
For many, it is the combination that makes the difference: learning a real skill, spending time with other people, having fun and feeling that they are making progress.
We also know that life gets busy. Having a class in your weekly routine gives you something to look forward to, a reason to switch off from work and an opportunity to do something for yourself and when you keep learning, there is always something new to work towards -
a new turn, better timing, a smoother connection, a new dance level, your first social dance, your first performance.
The journey doesn't have to end when your first six-week beginner course finishes. If you discover that you love dancing, there are opportunities to continue learning, developing your skills and becoming part of the wider R&M experience.

Your story could start with our classes
We know that signing up for something new takes a little courage. You might be wondering whether you will fit in, whether you will remember the steps or whether you will feel comfortable dancing with other people. You don't need to have those answers before you start. You don't need previous dance experience. You don't need to be naturally coordinated. And you don't need to wait until you feel completely confident to give yourself the opportunity to learn.
You can come as you are, bring your partner or join on your own, and take the first step from there. We will help you work on the dancing. The rest is something you get to discover along the way.
We feel incredibly grateful for every student who has walked through our doors and become part of the R&M story. The classes, the progress, the friendships, the parties and the shared memories are what make this more than just a dance school to us, and if you have been thinking about learning salsa or bachata in Sydney, maybe your story is waiting to begin, too.
Come for the dancing. Stay for the experiences, the progress and the people you meet along the way.
