Your Dance Journey at R&M Latin Dance: From Beginner to Confident Dancer
Have you ever watched people dance Salsa and Bachata and wished you could do the same? Maybe you also want to get fitter in a fun way, meet new people, feel more confident or simply have something exciting to look forward to each week. Whatever brings you to the dance floor, your first class is just the beginning!

At R&M Latin Dance in Sydney, we believe learning to dance is about much more than memorising steps. It’s about building confidence, discovering new skills, connecting with people and finding a hobby that can keep growing with you. Whether you’re a complete beginner or ready to take your dancing further, there’s a place for you in our dance community.
Here's how your journey might look!
1. Start With the Beginners Course
Everyone starts somewhere! Our six-week beginner courses are designed for adults with little or no previous dance experience. You don’t need a partner, no special level of fitness or any natural dancing ability. Just bring yourself and a willingness to give something new a go. During your first six weeks, you’ll gradually learn the foundations of Salsa or Bachata, develop coordination, understand the music and start connecting with a dance partner.
Instead of being thrown into a room and expected to keep up, you’ll learn progressively, with guidance from Rhian and Mariano, who teach both sides of partner dancing.
By the end of the course, you will feel comfortable dancing a whole song with a partner and have the foundations to keep improving, and perhaps the best part - You’ll be learning alongside other beginners who are figuring it all out with you.
Your first six weeks are the start of something bigger. Sign up here for Sydney classes.

2. Move Up Through the Levels
Once you’ve built your foundations, you can continue progressing through our Salsa and Bachata levels. Each level gives you the opportunity to develop your technique, learn new combinations, improve your musicality and become more comfortable dancing with different partners. As you progress, you’ll learn more routines and moves, but you'll also discover that dancing isn’t simply about knowing more moves. You’ll learn to adapt, listen to the music, communicate through movement and develop your own style.

Our progressive approach helps you build on what you’ve learned rather than constantly starting from scratch. In 6 weeks you have the chance to actually learn and absorb the new movements through repetition, leading and following instructions and the learn mini combos that help you to develop your dance flow to become more advanced! R&M currently offer over 12 levels of Salsa and of Bachata. So you can continue to keep challenging yourself, celebrating your improvements, making new friends and discovering just how much you’re capable of.
There’s always another move to master, another song to dance to and another reason to get excited about your next class.
3. Take the Stage in a Student Show

Want to challenge yourself in a completely different way? As you progress, you may have the opportunity to take part in a student dance show. Some students are keen to only dance
in the social nights, while others find the student show a goal from the start! You might find out it's easier than you think!
Imagine learning choreography with your classmates, rehearsing together, choosing costumes and finally stepping onto the stage to perform in front of an audience. This gives our students the best time bonding together, we also manage to squeeze in Karaoke sessions, dinners, drinks and more in between rehearsals - it's really fun!
Student shows are about more than looking good under the lights. They give you a shared goal, help you develop performance skills and encourage you to work as a team. You’ll experience the excitement of preparing for a performance, the satisfaction of seeing your hard work come together and the memories you create along the way, and no, you don’t need to dream of becoming a professional dancer to enjoy it! Performing is an opportunity to push your comfort zone, work on the moves you know in a deeper way and express yourself and celebrate how far you’ve come with your friends and family. Participation is optional, so you can choose the dance journey that suits you.

4. Keep Growing With Speciality Classes
Your dancing can keep evolving long after you’ve mastered the basics. Our speciality classes offer opportunities to focus on particular skills and explore the details that make dancing feel more personal and advanced. Depending on the classes offered, these may include:
Ladies’ styling: Explore body movement, arm styling, musical expression, fluidity and confidence in the way you move.
Men’s styling: Develop your own movement, footwork, musicality, body control and individual expression.
Rueda De Casino: A cultural dynamic group dance where multiple couples form a circle and execute synchronized Cuban salsa moves together.
Technique and musicality: Understand the finer details behind your dancing and learn how to make your movements feel more natural and connected.
These classes let you explore the creative side of dancing, develop your own identity on the dance floor and add new dimensions to your Salsa or Bachata.
You’re not just learning to follow a routine. You’re learning how to make the dance your own.
5. Practice, Improve and Feel the Difference
Like any new skill, dancing gets better with practice and this perk R&M offers for free alongside their dance courses. Our practice opportunities give you extra time to revisit what you’ve learned, work on tricky combinations and build confidence outside your regular lessons, which is very important for the student's progress. R&M care so much to provide these bonus sessions for their students and encourage everyone to get together and dance and have fun. This can generally happen 1-3 times a term.
Practice Sessions are also a chance to ask questions, repeat movements at your own pace and become more comfortable dancing with other people. You don’t have to get everything right the first time. Progress comes from showing up.
Over time, your dancing becomes more natural and easy, you start recognising the music, responding more comfortably to your partner and enjoying the dance rather than worrying about what comes next. That’s when all the pieces start coming together.

6. Make Friends at Social Mixers, Events and Parties
One of the best things about learning to dance is discovering the people who come with it. At R&M, your experience can extend well beyond the classroom through social mixers, dance events and parties. Our social mixers are a relaxed gathering where you have the chance to meet your class mates properly and chat at a bar or pub (and sometimes followed by wild nights out!), these are generally weekend events and mean that R&M students get to meet and greet, especially important to welcome in all our new beginners students!

Other events can be more formal, such as your Graduation party at the end of a term, where you will dress up and go to dance at a beautiful event. This gives the students time to practice what you’ve learned in a relaxed environment and enjoy Salsa and Bachata outside your regular classes, and yes this party is with a beautiful bar, entertainment from Rhi and Mariano, and sometimes includes the students showcase performance.

The social aspect of the dance experience is highlighted at R&M Latin Dance, Rhi and Mariano believe that dancing and socialising were meant to be together and part of the experience and part of the learning journey. The bonds our students can last years and often lifetime (not to mention the romantic relationships and marriages we have been the catalyst for!), even after they stop dancing.
You might arrive knowing only a few people from your class and gradually find yourself surrounded by familiar faces, new friendships and people who share your enthusiasm for dancing. It’s a great way to add something social to your week, meet people outside your usual routine and have fun while continuing to improve.
7. Dance Video Projects to Celebrate Your Progress
Another feature R&M supply are our dance projects for Salsa and Bachata, where students learn a choreography, dress up for the occasion and come together to film their moves in studio or on a different location. It’s your chance to put your skills into practice, learn a routine as a group and create something you can look back on with pride, the whole experience becomes a little achievement worth celebrating.

You don’t need to be a professional dancer or perform on a big stage, it’s a fun, low pressure way to challenge yourself, build confidence in front of the camera and see how much you’ve progressed, and once the video is ready, it can be shared online — giving you something memorable to show your friends, celebrate with your dance crew and look back on as part of your journey.
8. Explore Dance Trips and New Experiences

Why keep the dancing in the studio? Dance trips offer another way to experience the music, culture and excitement of Latin dance while sharing the adventure with other dancers.
Of course, you can go alone - but R&M go together! Rhi and Mariano have taken their students overseas to dance around Europe. It's so amazing to go to another part of the world and find a Latin party and dance with anyone, anywhere! We have made so many memorable experiences with your dance friends, these opportunities can take your passion beyond your regular weekly routine. Travelling with people who share your interest gives you another reason to keep learning, dancing and exploring.
As your confidence grows, the world of Salsa and Bachata can open up in ways you might never have imagined when you first walked into a beginners class.
